# Transactions and cash flow

> View, filter and analyze your bank transactions by category.

The **Transactions** page (`/transactions`) brings every transaction from your connected accounts together in one place. This guide shows you how to view and filter your transactions, analyze how spending evolves by category, rename a merchant, add notes to a transaction, link a transfer between accounts, move a transaction to another account, exclude a transaction from cash flow, and import transactions from a file.

<Info>
  Transactions come from the accounts you connect through open banking. To get started, connect a bank from the **Accounts** page. See [Bank sync](/en/features/bank-sync).
</Info>

## View and filter transactions

Open **Transactions** in the sidebar to see the full list of transactions across all your connected accounts. Each row shows the merchant logo and name, the category, the source account, the amount and the date.

At the top, the **All**, **Income** and **Expenses** tabs show each side of cash flow at a glance. From there, you can refine the list with filters that combine with each other:

* **Category** — one or several categories; pick a whole group or individual categories.
* **Merchant** — one or several merchants.
* **Entity type** — companies or people.
* **Account** — one or several of your accounts.
* **Amount** — a minimum and maximum range.
* **Period** — the date range (see **Choose the period** below).
* **Search** — free text. Search matches the name and merchant, but also the original bank description, so it finds a transaction by the text on your statement even after you've renamed the merchant.

Each active filter shows as a chip you can remove. **Clear all** resets every filter except the period.

<Note>
  The income, expense and balance totals at the top of the list always reflect the active filters — the entire filtered set, not just the transactions visible on the page.
</Note>

<Note>
  Each transaction shows the calendar day your bank recorded, regardless of your time zone. A user in the Azores, in Lisbon or in Tokyo always sees the same day for the same transaction: the day on the bank statement.
</Note>

<Tip>
  Categorization is automatic, but you can always correct it. Fix a transaction's category directly in the list, by clicking the category, or when you open it; for several transactions at once, select them and change the category in bulk. Any of these corrections teaches guito: matching transactions that arrive next already land in the category you picked. To understand how this works, see [Automatic categorization](/en/concepts/automatic-categorization).
</Tip>

## Choose the period

The date selector at the top controls the period for the whole page — the list and the charts. It has shortcuts for the most common ranges — **this month**, **last month**, **last 30 days** (the default), **last 3 months**, **last 12 months**, **this year** and **last year** — and, for a custom period, a calendar where you pick the start and end dates and confirm with **Apply**.

<Tip>
  Turn on **Forecast** to extend the period to its end from your recurring transactions — handy for anticipating how much you still have left to spend or receive. It's unavailable when there are no recurring items to project. See [Recurring transactions](/en/features/recurring).
</Tip>

## See how spending evolves

The **Evolution** panel, at the top of the page, shows where your money goes over time, always according to the active filters.

* A **band** shows the make-up of spending by category across the period, and beneath it a **ranked breakdown** shows each category's weight, in euros and as a percentage.
* Switch between **€** and **%**. The percentage view normalizes each period to 100%, so an unusual month can't squash the rest.
* With the tab on **All**, expenses and income split apart: expenses below the line, income above.
* The breakdown starts at the category-group level and drills down to each category when you filter by category.
* Click a category to filter the list by it.

If you turned on **Forecast**, the chart extends with an estimate of the rest of the period from your recurring transactions. The same spending-by-category view is also available as a widget on the **Home** page, with the make-up of the last 12 months.

<Tip>
  For natural-language questions — "Where do I spend the most money?", "How much did I spend on restaurants this month?", "Are my expenses going up?" — ask the chat assistant. It analyzes the same transactions and answers in text. See the [AI assistant](/en/features/ai-assistant).
</Tip>

## Rename a merchant

If you would rather see a different name for a merchant (for example, a shorter or clearer one), you can rename it. The change applies to every transaction from that merchant.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the transaction">
    In **Transactions**, click a transaction from the merchant you want to rename.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Edit the transaction">
    From the actions menu (the three-dots icon), choose **Edit**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Change the merchant name">
    Change the **Merchant** field to the name you prefer to see and click **Save**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Apply it to the past as well">
    The new name applies from here on to that merchant's next transactions. When guito asks, confirm to apply it to past transactions too.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  If you type a name of your own, the change is personal: only you see it, and other users still see the canonical name (for example, "Continente"). If you pick one of the brands suggested in the field, guito shows that brand's official name, with its logo.
</Note>

## Add notes to a transaction

You can save a personal note on any transaction, synced, imported or manual, for example to remember why you made an expense or that someone owes you the money back.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the transaction">
    Click a transaction to open the detail panel, or choose **Edit** from the actions menu.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Write the note">
    In the **Notes** field, write what you want to remember.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Confirm. The note is private: only you see it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Link a transfer between accounts

guito automatically detects transfers between your own accounts and excludes them from your income and expense totals, with no action needed from you. When automatic matching is not enough to decide, you can link the two transactions by hand. To understand why transfers stay out of the totals, see [Transfers](/en/concepts/transfers).

If a transfer is not detected, you can link the two transactions by hand:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the transfer">
    Click a transaction that is a transfer between your own accounts.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the Transfers category">
    Edit the category and choose **Transfers**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick the matching pair">
    guito suggests candidate transactions from the other account. Pick the correct pair.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Done">
    Both transactions are linked and automatically excluded from cash flow.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Move a transaction to another account

If you recorded a transaction in the wrong account, you can move it to another of your accounts. This applies only to transactions you created manually: synced or imported transactions stay tied to their source account.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the transaction">
    Click the manual transaction you want to move and choose **Edit**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the account">
    In the **Bank account** field, select the destination account.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Confirm. The transaction now counts in the account you chose.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Exclude a transaction from cash flow

Sometimes a transaction should not count toward your totals (for example, a one-off entry you do not want reflected in your expenses). You can exclude it without deleting it.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the details panel">
    Click the transaction to open the details panel.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the actions menu">
    Click the actions menu (the three-dots icon).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Exclude it from cash flow">
    Choose **Ignore in balance**. The transaction stops counting toward income and expense totals, but stays visible in the list.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Include it again">
    To count it again, repeat and choose **Include in balance**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Import transactions from a file

If you want to bring in transactions from a broker via a CSV file, the import happens on the **Investments** page, not here. See [Import and export data](/en/features/import-export) for the step by step.
